My horse is unfit
HELP!!!
Answers:Look at the feed and see how much protein, sugar, and fat content is in it. Also is your horse in a stall and inactive or eating lots and lots of grass ?
Cut back on the feed if on pasture.
If in a stall, I would advise going to plain oats with a GOOD supplement like Mega Max vitamin/minerals. This is for summer and unfit horse.
Also, Appledex or free access to a mineral salt lick. I have pasture horses that get fed every other day, sometimes every 3 because the pasture is so good .. and they stay fat, in the belly too!
My show horses are kept in a stall and rotated outside in a 'dry lot' with a flake of hay or the small 3 acre pasture so they are not getting much grass. They each get about 3 hours of outside time each day..
..even the stallion - he is on the backside of the barn in a pasture with an electric line at the top of the fence. He can't see the mares which are probably 75 yards away and down the hill from him. He can visit and see the geldings and 11 hand pony, but no sharing because he is too valuable to be hurt.
The pasture horses, of course, have less energy than a stalled horse, but the barn has monitoring cameras and security system alarm for theft, fire, delivering mares, etc. This includes the hay side of the barn in the event of a fire. I have 2 fire walls between the stacks of hay... sometimes I have 2,000 bales in there - ready to burn ! I am cautious because I've seen the results of a barn fire. Emotional. Ugly. Severe pain.
