My horse keeps spooking at calves2007-11-24 21:18:34

Well today me and my friend did break away roping at our rodeo camp and my horse USED to have problems going into the chute but she's fine with that, she had done great at our practice earlier that day she got me in the perfect position to rope him, but today as soon as I got close to the calf she reared up took off and started bucking, I stayed on and kept riding her over there but no matter what I did she wouldn't get close enough for me to rope it. I can't seem to get her over this fear of calves or her fear of the trailer! any ideas?

A lot of my friends that work with cattle say the best thing to do to get a horse used to cows is to turn them out with cows. I'm sure it won't be the best advice you get on this site, but if you have the opportunity - even if it is dairy cows, turn them out for a few days togethor. If it works for career cowboys, it should work for you too.

Good Luck!

We have a 500 acre farm in Virginia and we break Quarter Horses. It takes a LOT of time and work to keep them from spooking. Are you tense? Horses sense that stuff. Try loosening up the tightness of your legs. Hope this helps.
my horse had a fear of sheep but we yarded him with them and he was fine after that. He actually enjoyed rounding them up after that
well i rope everday and what you might want to do is just track some calves down to the end of the arena with out a rope so she can get used to get in behind that calf all the way down the arena... really work on her getting in close behind the calf... and once you have that start tracking then swinging your rope, don't forget to stand up because rope horses listen to you body and if you sit down they're gonna want to stop. and keep you're rope speed the same. you'll get it good luck
ok, the best i can tell you will fix both problems, and it did for me.
