My horse keeps winking
I have a 22 yr old Missouri Fox Trotter that has had a tough life. My husband and I adopted her two years ago from shelter for horses in Central Wisconsin (http://equineadoption.com)
We do have a gelding that is 25 yrs (Arabian) they are the best of buddies, they are always with each other. The gelding likes to be the "top" horse in our pack (we only have the two horses) and our mare doesn't seem to mind, but the mare will go to the gelding and squat and wink, she is always in heat, right now it isn't so bad but she is still wanting him to mount her, the gelding just walks away and shows no interest.
How can I get this to stop and will our mare go through a life change like women do?
When the mare is like this it is like she is in a transe, like so horned up. When we go on trail rides she seems to not listen to anything we ask of her, she doesn't go crazy or anything but she has her mind on her hind end and is always trying to get the gelding to pay attention to her.
Answers:Your mare sounds like she is a prime candidate for some Regumate therapy. This is a drug that suppresses esterus in mares, and is used by people who show and compete mares and who don't want their mares' performances altered by their being in heat during competition. Additionally, there are some vets who will prescribe and use this drug to regulate the cycles of problem mares who have trouble conceiving and holding on to a pregnancy. I have used Regumate myself on the breeding farm where I used to work, with great success- it can be used to facilitate scheduled breedings, to help a mare keep her pregnancy ( it tones and tightens the uterine muscles as a side effect, and this helps prevent miscarriage in some mares) and also to help mares that are continuously in heat. At 22 years old, your mare is NOT too old to be bred, if you want a foal from her- many mares have foals up into their 30's with no problems. I once knew a mare ( an Arab) who had 19 foals in her lifetime, and the last one was born when she was 26 !! As long as her teeth are in good shape and she can get enough to eat, and her general health is good, there is no reason she can't be bred. You do need to have the vet check your mare for an infection ( have him do a culture of the uterus) and take some blood to check for hormonal problems and problems with her thyroid and pituitary glands, prior to starting Regumate treatment. The treatment should stop her from being in esterus so much of the time, and make it much easier to ride and work with her. Hope this helps. Good luck.
she is scared.
He is a big flirt!
some mares tend to be more "marish" than others. it may just be her personality. has this mare been bred before? sometimes broodmares are seemingly desperate for breeding. you may look into drugs such as regumate, which will control her cycles. i had my mare on a hormone shot (which i could administer myself after i purchased it from the vet) which would stop her cycles all together. she went from being a pissy mare, to acting like the gelding. good luck!
hell, give me her number!.... man I shouldn't have said that...
He wants you
maybe she doesn't find him to be a suitable mate
I have heard about putting in a marble. Ask your vet about this , it fits into the cervix of the mare and I believe supresses their heat cycles.
Sorry to tell you but she wants to be breed that is all she wants out of him and nothing more there is not much that can be done about it in the pastuer but as for when you are rideing either make the two horses ride side by sied or get teh gelding in the front. At her age she is proabily to old to be breed so. breeding her is not the option here if she was younger I would say let her have a foal. She will stay in heat untill fall if you live in a older climate but if you happen too live in a warm state like Nevada Or California she may never come out of heat.. If it realy bothers you seprate the two of them in diffrent pastures it may help when you are rideing.
Your mare wants to be a mom .I'd go ahead and bred here but make sure she's in true heat she may be false heat because she wants to bred. The geldings not going to pay her any attention anyway.
