My horse knows how but wont2007-11-24 21:18:34

He knows how to do lead changes and only does them when he wants too. He will do a full lead change, but whenever I ask he only changes 1/2 and doesnt change the back.

Answers:

Your horse is cross-cantering if he is only switching "1/2" in his lead changes. This is commonly a result of injury because it is uncomfortable for him to change or also poor riding. It is not that he does not want to, you just need to give him a little more encouragement. I would suggest using half of the ring to begin with. Make sure that when you are asking for the lead change that your outside leg is well behind your girth and put pressure there. They will move away from that pressure and understand that balance to switch leads. Also, make sure that you have your horse collected before you ask for a lead change. I have found through experience that if your balance is all over the place and you are not really gathered, your horse becomes flustered and will often cross-canter. Good luck with the training!!

You got a horse?!?

Wow...

are you sure you are asking correctly? maybe you need to ask your trainer and they can help you with them
It sound like you are not setting him up correctly. When asking for a lead change for the a horse to successfully complete this you have to be well balance and out of their way. He is change on the front end I assume. Your seat may be in the way of him changing in the rear end. Make sure that you are centered and giving the correct signals.
