My horse snorts2007-11-24 21:18:35

When I am leading my horse or walking him, he snorts a lot. I just bought him yesterday and it was a new place and it was hot, but is he just checking out everything? His ears were forward the whole time and he is a paint/thoroughbred cross. He doesn't snort when I have his full attention like when we trot or canter or jump. Just at the walk he snorts constantly. He has a short attention span I know that because he pressed his face up against the mirrors when we were walking.

My horse snorts to show that she is spunky or that she is so proud of herself. I turn her out and I chase her around but of course she bolts away and stops and snorts into the air with her tail up saying, Yeah I am fast than you... Also when I lunge her she snorts when she is feeling her oats ;)

Yep, he's just checking things out. They get a better smell of stuff when the snort.

My good mare is a big time snorter. She is 19, has traveled all over the country showing, and still snorts at the littlest things! She cracks me up!

Yeah I would definately say that he is checking things out there is a horse at my barn who was the same breed and he lived here for 11 years and still snorted every time we came up the hill from the paddocks.

He could just have some mild allergies, or maybe he simply needs more exercise.

Horses usually snort when they are unsure of their surroundings. It could be that he's never been worked in front of mirrors and just isn't sure who keeps following him around everywhere! : )
