My horse spooks by the trail2007-11-24 21:18:36

I want to take my horse out on trail and get practice in. But everytime by the trail outback he starts to prance. He high steps. I dont think he would take off but i want to take him on trail. What should i do? Some people say have someone else do it but then other people say just do it. Helppp

your horse needs to learn to listen to you more. don't lead him through the trail he will think that he won because you got off and could not make him go down the trail so next time he will try twice as hard to not have to go on the trail. when you are ready to ride the trail be vary calm and take your horse up as close to the trail as you can with out him getting excited. then wait for him to want to go forward. tell him that he is welcome to move forward on to the trail but can not move away from it or turn away from it. soon he will get board and want to move on to the trail. this could take as long as 30 to 45 minutes so be ready for a long wait by taking a book to read take a phone to talk to a friend on. when your horse moves out on the trail he may become excited again but do the same thing and he will move out faster the next time. Don't force him to go on the trail as he will learn that it is as frighting as he thinks it is and he will become harder to ride him on any trail. for more advice you can look at a book called "the horse behavior problem solver" which is a great resource for problem horses. Try going with a buddy on a trail, as some horses like to have company on trails for reasurance.
