My horse started bucking hard, not sure what to do2007-11-24 21:18:36

have my 7 yo horse 3 years. always been a little hot, but not bronc-like-does the 50 yard shy, bolted once but usually great on the trail, super walk, willing, etc. i am 43, ridden all my life but not a trainer have not been riding this winter (montana) so his activity level is down. rode sat and he'd back up and rear, start to walk, back and rear (new behavior). would then try to lope, when not allowed he backed into hte fence. I was just thinking to lunge him, which i don't do regularly as he hasn't needed it, and he started bucking, really hard. Eventually I fell and as i did he caught me with a hoof on the face (30 stitches) then took off.Back from ER i did lunge him, got on him and felt him tense to buck again got scared and slid off (and lunged him, got back on rode out to stable).So..could be bit i don't like, little exercise, sore somewhere..but now i am a little scared of him. don't want to hurt him in any way, hate to sell him (he has feet problems)..advice? thanks!

Wow sorry to hear about the stitches. The first ride of the spring is always a little exciting because of the time off. I would check the saddle blanket to see if anything was poking him and his cinch. Then check his teeth if the bit is hitting a sore spot in his mouth it could be pain full for him. So maybe have a vet come out and check his teeth they may need to be floated. And finally horse's are very sensitive to our feelings and motions. If he sense's that you are scared or nervous he could pick up on that and feel confused or scared himself. Take your time with him and get that connection back on the ground until you feel comfortable to get back on with confidence again. It was good that you got back on him that day that you got bucked off. Just take your time and I hope you both can enjoy riding again.

Sounds like he decided he is not a trained horse after the winter off to me. Some horses do not do well with time off. First, get him checked out by the vet for any soreness issues. What type of feet problems? We had a TB who bucked us off after being fine for years- found out he had fractured a bone somehow and was in pain.
