My horse will not lunge

My horse will not lunge2007-11-24 21:18:37

I have tried whipping him but he just keeps coming back to me! I push him away every time but he comes right back! He just won't go in circles! I've also tried keeping my body even with his shoulders. Any suggestions?

& my other question is...every time I try to lead my horse he always tries to trot! I pull him back but he tosses his head & other things like that! How can I get him to walk beside me?

Answers:

Amanda... throw that whip away! Your horse is not understanding what you want and a whip is not going to help your situation, only do more damage. First, your horse sounds like he thinks of you as his "safety" zone. He does not respect your space and doesn't understand what you want when you say... get out there and move or I'll hit you. You need to get back to the basics and teach that horse to be a horse, not a pet in your pocket if you understand what I'm trying to say. Lungeing can be very hard for some people and it is more than just standing out in a middle of a circle and watching the horse move around you. When it comes to training them anyway. You need to learn ride before you enter a race, right? Well, first you need to learn to command a lunge before you can train it. Get some help 'cause the problem here is miscommunication!

As far as the trotting on the lead, how old is this horse? He doesn't sound very well halter broke and certainly, again, not respecting you or your queues. I would highly recommend finding someone in your area with the knowledge to help you and your horse get through these issues before they get worse and out of control. But please, put the whip back in the tack room and let it get some dust on it. These are training aids, not for "whipping" purposes and should not be used by unguided or uneducated handlers. they can ruin a good horse pretty quick when used incorrectly. Certainly, not going to do anything for you if your horse does not understand what you want in the first place!

well first off i find that the horse responds better when i am standing even with his or hers stomach. and for the trotting my horse did the same thing. i just slowed my walk down a lot and said easy over and over in a soft voice. when saying easy say it like eeeeeaaaasssyyyyy. so that way the horse responds to the slow voice.
have some one on him and then let the horse see the whip behind him and of course have the lunge rope on the bridle.
