My horse will not walk over water2007-11-24 21:18:37

ok my horse is a 9 year old saddlebred gelding and he will not walk over water is there anything that will help he leaps over and trots over but will not walk no matter what i try please help

It's not uncommon for horses to be scared to walk through water. I would get off of him and lead her through the water. It could take some coaxing, but he'll eventually put one hoof in. He might back up again...it can take a while and a lot of work. You just have to remain patient and keep circling him around and trying to lead him through. Remember, you need to be confident. You can't think "Water coming up, he won't go through." You have to think "do do do do do, nothing strange is coming up to be worried about, do do do." The confidence will transfer to him, but if you think "oh water, how will he react?" he will sense this and stop and freak out again. Just work on leading him through. Have treats ready to give him, even when he just gets one hoof in or two hooves in. Don't feel bad about bribing him through with treats. If he goes through once or twice with treats, take them away and lead him through. Once he's walking through confidently that way, get on him and ride him through the water. Again, he might bulk, but remain calm and patient and just keep coaxing.

If possible when you ride him through, have a friend whose horse isn't afraid of water and have him lead. Horses are herd animals and will follow each other through otherwise "dangerous" situations if the leader does.
