My pony gets a sunburt nose
We put factor 50 on each day but as he grazes he must wipe it off! He burned quite badly last summer and we do't want to see him suffer again any ideas please!
Answers:we have exactly the same problem with our cob - he has been so badly burnt he required vet treatment and that is with suncream on. We found a nose net on Robinsons.com which attaches to the head collar and covers the nose - we use this with factor 50 regardeless of whether it is sunny or not. The other thing to look at is your pasture - our cob is fine unless there are buttercups in the field. These cause a build up of toxins in some horses which causes an extreme photosensitivity meaning they get really badly burnt, really easily. If there are any in your field then go and spray with a weed killer that is safe for use with horses - this takes a couple of weeks to work but is the best long term solution. You should still use sunscrean though.
Also if your horse comes in at night then you could put some aftersun lotion as this helps to rehydrate the skin and soothes the pain a bit. If you do get a really bad burn then keep him in until it is totally healed and you can ask your vet for some bute if it is really painful.
Good luck with keeping him sunburn free.
Maybe apply some sunscreen lotion to the pony.
Total block repeatedly!
they make a fly mask that covers the nose. it seems to help most horses. Good Luck!
a sunhat
Fly mask and keep on with the total sunblock.
Be wary when using fly masks. One that doesnt fir properly can be worse than his sunburn. Ask your vet if you can use a sport sunblock for humans on your pony. Most of these are sweat and water proof and dont rub off easily. Never hurrts to ask.
Keep your pony in during the day and let him graze at night. Most ponies over eat in the summer anyway and doing it this way stops any irritation from flies and helps with the diet.
You should just add more sunblock throughout the day. Make sure that it is strong, because if your pony gets sunburned too much, it could have skin problems; just like humans.
well i would rub in sunblock and keep rubbing it in or let it sit till its all dry !
