My pony is lame

My pony is lame2007-11-24 21:18:40

I rode my pony yesterday and we jumped and she was perfectly fine. I rubbed her legs down, but I didnt wrap her because it wasnt that hard of a workout. She had her feet trimmed after I rode her. Later that night another lesson kid rode her. Now, today when I came to ride her, she didnt want to move. I dragged her into the crossties and out to the ring. I got on her and she was fine at the walk. When I trotted she didnt feel right, but she wasnt limping. I got off and checked her legs but they arent swollen or hot. I cantered her and she just shuffled along. She is a green pony and kind of new to jumping. I trotted her on concrete and she looks sore in the back. It's not that serious so I'm not going to call the vet. I rubbed her legs down again after I rode her. I'm going to be gone for a week so she'll get a week or R&R. Any advice? Thanks for your help!

you said she got her feet trimmed. she might be sore from that. it is common for horses to be sore after they are trimmed. especially if a little too much was taken off or they are overdue. It sounds like she is sore on more than one foot which is probably why she isn't so visibly lame. its possible that it could be an abscess having showed up so quickly, but they usually cause the horse to be visibly lame. Id give her a day or two of rest and then see if she is any better. if she isnt then i would have the vet check her out.

Sounds like a possible abcess. They come on suddenly and tend to show up in gaits bigger than a walk - my guess is if you look REALLY closely, you would see shes not 100% sound at the walk.Check for increased pulses or "hot" spots. It also could have been an abcess that was opened when your farrier trimmed her feet.SOAK SOAK SOAK !! 3 times a day if possible - with epsom salts to bring out the abcess.Try to have a friend do it at least once a day while your away.Good luck.
You can try using Absorbine on her legs or anything like that to get the blood flow and circulation better in her legs. That's my only guess though. And try to give her some light excercise by lunging her.
it could be an absess. she is just probably sore from being trimmed then riden again. she is fine, jsut give her a couple days to recooperate. if she doesnt get better, call your vet or farrier asap.

i hope she gets better!

I would wait a couple of days and then see how she is.

If no improvement, I would have her evaluated by the vet.

she either has an abcess, a bruise, or she is trim sore. my horse has crooked legs and he gets like that all the time. she should be ok after a little while.
