My riding
I have been riding for about 2 years without any training. So when i was riding one of my uncles mares she reared up and i fell off. She tried to swing her hind quarters around at me but my uncle grabed the reins just in time. I didnt wanna get on another horse until about 5 months ago. My uncle recenly told me that his mare(ruby) reared up because i did something wrong. So now he is giving me lessons when he comes to our house. These are my questions. Why do i have to keep my feet down? Why do i need to keep my thumbs up? How low do i need to have my hands? thanks in advance no stupid answers plz
Answers:i am also a lessoned rider, so i have asked these questions too.
feet need to be down because it keeps you stable and gives you balance when you post trot and most definatley when you canter.
your thumbs need to be up to steer a certain way or else it goes wrong and your horse will get confused. also the tradition goes back a very long time in english riding.
your hands should not be on the mane but not up high. make a 90 degree angle with your arms against your side like your elbows are on your side and your fore arms are not. this should be roughly where your hands should be, keep them steady.(be so careful about bringing your hands up to high, if your horse is particulary trained, it can sense your confusion and not listen. shows whos boss!)
buy books like "show riding" or "english riding for dummies" it really helped me when i started. also go to horse summer camp like in virginia there is a fantastic 2 week english riding camp that has a show at the end and you ride twice a day with your own horse. its called camp friendship. gay name. cool camp.
