My show horses mane stands on end Help
My Paint show mare's mane is medium thick, and all falls to the same side. But when I trimmed it so it was the proper 4 inch length for showing, it now wants to stand on end like a mohawk! It makes her neck look thicker than it should, so it will hurt her in the show ring. I've banded it once and instead of lying flat it wanted to stand up in air with a dozen little piggy tails! I have thinned it a bit, but I think the problem is more to do with the coarseness and wiryness of her mane than the fact that it is too thick. Any suggestions of what I can do to train it to lay flat? She is out in pasture so wearing a slinky alot won't work.
Answers:I also show horses, and find the same problem with my Hanoverian mare. What I have done, is right after trimming or pulling the mane put it in training braids (show braids that aren't pulled up), while braiding the mane spray some QuicBraid into it, it helps to keep the hairs in place, and is like a hair spray. Don't use a detangling product, because it will only make the hair more slippery, and it will come out of the braids like if you used too much conditioner in your own hair. Here's a picture of QuicBraid: http://www.statelinetack.com/global/prod...
Also, leave the braids in for at least a day and that should help, then everytime you groom your horse spray in QuicBraid and brush her mane down. As soon as it starts to stick up again, put the training braids back. You can also use QuicBraid for keeping your show braids secure, and free of flyaways.
