My thoroughbred mare is too thin, and she has a lot of ribs showing. I put corn oil in her grain now, but what else will help this? Please help, she is scaring me!
Answers:If you have already talked to your vet and they didn't find any thing wrong I would try looking in to a supplement that will provide more fats and nutrients for you horse as well as increasing her feed.
I would have her checked for ulcers. They are so easy to miss. I missed that diagnosis on my mule for years, he was a rail, wouldn't hardly eat, dull coat, crabby, bucky, you name it. The 4th vet finally figured it out and now hes a pig and huge and I am having to WATCH his weight lol. Yes it is normal for TB's to be on the thinner side, but if she is worrying you, I would definately have her checked.
Other than that, switch her over to equine senior, it helps put the pounds on without the hottness. But definately consider ulcers first.
thouroubreds are known for beiin thin expesially when they r older. there is nothin that u can really do bout it except keep feeding her
start giving her sweet stuff to fatten her up little and give her a cup of beet pulp. This is normal for thoroughbreds anyway so don't be scared.
I hope you have already contacted the vet for something so urgent rather than seeking answers from people who cannot even see your horse.
contact your vet and see what he has to say, she might have a disease!!And feed her alot of food, and if she doesn't get better, contact your vet!
peep pulp pellet is the best weight gain not exsspensive either.most of the feed stores carry it.it comes in a fifty lb bag.i feed it in the afternoon.you need tostart with a half of a small coffe can of beet pulp pellets put it in a bucket add water to cover it let set for a few hrs.(it expands) then give it to her.up the beet pulp to a full can do the same with the water.what I do I mae it at night for the next day.you will see the weight coming on.at 1st she may put up her nose at i but they all end up loving it.in fact i put my wormer in it they wolf it down its great.
Yes, Thoroughbreds are lean, but its not natural for them to be showing a lot of rib, that鈥檚 just ridiculous. That鈥檚 not natural for any horse.
