My vet has diagnosed my horse with an ulcer in her foot help2007-11-24 21:18:43

The ulcer is at the tip of her frog, and is about the size of a baked bean, it is white with a hole in the middle. i have searched the web and cannot find anything remotely similar

does anyone have any experience of this?

I have heard of canker ulcers on the frog of a horses hoof. Your description sounds about the same. Believe it or not, they came up with a maggot therapy a few years ago, I think there is also a treatment with sugardine. (It's been some time since I read whatever article this was) It was quite successful, I believe. I'm not sure if it's still around (though if successful, it probably is), you could probably find something on Google.

What treatment did the vet recommend? Is the horse on antibiotics? Warm water epsom soaks might help, but really--what did the vet say to do?

If your vet took the time to diagnose the horse I am sure he took the time to give you treatment. If he wasn't clear then call him up and ask him lots of questions, even if they sound stupid to ask you don't want to risk your horse!

I am studying to be a pre-vet and i've never heard of this but hey theres always more to learn! I thought horses only got ulcers in their stomachs...

I haven't heard of an "ulcer" in the foot, though absesses are quite common. The best treatment for this is soaking in warm water and Epsom salts for 10 minutes twice per day, keeping the area clean and dry (either by wrapping with gauze and vetwrap or getting one of those handy boots) and keeping your horse on the antibiotics your vet prescribed. It should clear up in a few weeks at most.
