are there shots or something other than surgery to get the testicle to come down??..someone told me there is a series of three shots that sometimes works...what are the three shots??

Answers:

I have a friend who's expensive show prospect yearling colt had a retained testicle this spring. They took it to the best Equine vet nearby, who put it under general anesethic and attempted surgery. It did not work as they could not find the testicle even with surgery. I do not think it was the vet's fault, this is just one of those problems that can sometimes be solved, and sometimes not. The cost was $1000 and she is now left with a colt that is acting studdy and has a poor future. Who wants a mini stallion? And if you were to keep him as a stallion, would he be fertile? The retained testicle won't produce viable sperm as it would be too warm, the other should be okay.

What is the answer to your question? Talk to the best equine vet you can find. This is not a time to save money and use a vet that doesn't do the proceedure frequently. Your satisfaction with the colt, and his riding future can depend upon him being successfully gelded! If hormone shots exist for the purpose of dropping a testicle, that vet will know about them. He can examine your horse and say what the chances of surgery helping are. I do know that many horses can be properly gelded with a retained testicle, but it is obviously not a sure thing.

Good luck.

It all depends on where the retained testicle is located. It could possibly come down with some manual assistance. We had our colt examined and waited until he was two years old before finally sending him for surgery. The missing testicle was found too far up to have ever dropped. It was also smaller than the one that did descend. We paid about $1000 for the surgery, but we now have a healthy gelding with no fear of complications arising when he's older.
