Naughty Haflinger or Spirited Morgan

Naughty Haflinger or Spirited Morgan2007-11-24 21:18:46

I bought a Morgan pony about two weeks ago. We now just moved it to a new boarding barn about 2-3 days ago. All the horses just got put together last night and now all of them are friends. I was riding my Morgan pony, Bronson in the indoor arena today for the first time at the new barn. He was missing his buddies so we brought one in and rode them together. He was much better now that his friend, Archie the Haflinger came in the arena. Archie extremely fat and chubby! He is seven years old and he is quite spunky. Which one would you rather ride? Do have any tips for me to stay calm on my Morgan when he is mad when his friends are not with him and I'm riding him? I want to know what you think. Also tell me about the personality about your horses or mules..ehem.*Mulereiner*..ehem... Thanks!

When a horse won't listen to you, I work them double time to get them to focus on me. If I feel that they will go ballistic in a lope, I tend to just work them in a controlled manner such as side passing, pivots, turning on forehand and haunches, framing up, etc. Anything that I can make that horse do till it focuses back on me. When it does settle down, I stop and reward it with a break.

My show mule used to go into jerk mode when we would school at a barn and anytime a new horse came in, I was just a fly on his back. It took alot of repetition and time, but he has finally figured out its alot easier to not pay attention to the new horses and to just behave.
