Need advice training my Arab to "Halter"
I have a 3 year old, very typey little filly which I am trying to sell at the moment. I need some help getting her to "Halter." I have been able to get her to bring her nose out to the whip most of the time, but I can't get her to square her front feet, and separate her back feet. Also any advice for getting her to "wear her ears" while showing in Halter?? I want her attention and her ears foward. Thanks in advance!
Answers:Does she pick up her feet? If not train her to. Then tap the hind-most front foot with the whip while giving her the command for the stance. She should pick up her foot and set it down a little forward. Any progress is good, praise her! She should eventually place her front feet in the right position on command. Now do the same tapping on her back feet, in the direction you want them to go. Be patient. She'll get there eventually at which point praise her a LOT.
For her ears, I usually say "ears" or something and snap my fingers. That usually makes them prick their ears toward the noise, so I reward them. Try it over and over again, and she probably will too. Add that to your basic stance command, and she'll associate it with it, and you should be done.
Remember, lots of praise, treats if you use them, and LOTS of patience.
It is hard to give you advice without seeing your horse. You might want to find someone in your area that shows and have them give you some pointers. They can show you want you are doing right/wrong and give you tips on how to make your horse square properly to enhance the positive and hide the negative.
