New Riding Exercises2007-11-24 21:19:18

My horse is young and smart. And i was looking for ideas on new riding exercises that i can do with him. Keeping in mind that my riding ring is only about the size of two 60ft round pens and that my horse is totally fearless. So bring on the challenges. haha and thanks for the help

Umm more details on what kind of exercises you want would be helpful. And what discipline are you riding him?

Well anyways there are a lot of circling exercises you can do. You could over bend a circle to the inside and then bend to the outside while staying on the same circle. That would be great for improving your horse's suppleness.

If you are an English rider you could also leg yield all the way down the long side of the arena.

A lot of transition exercises would be great. Like going from walk to canter, canter to walk to halt to back up, and so on. You could put up cones to do this. And challenge your horse to have the transition made in as few strides away from the cones as possible.

Also if you are interested in teaching him flying lead changes you could see how few strides of trot you can get in a simple lead change. It is a great start to learning flying changes.

Best wishes!

I'll add more if I can think of any

A good, simple exercise that is great for a small arena, is doing spirals. Basically you start at a trot or canter going in a circle as wide as your arena, then each time around the circle you make it a little smaller until you are basically doing the smallest circle your horse can. Once you are at the smallest circle you can make, you start circleing back out- making a larger circle each time around.
