New horse, how can i make he settle and feel at home2007-11-24 21:19:17

We bought a horse on Saturday, she is bein delivered tomorrow but i am worried how she will settle. The hores is a 5yr 15.2 section D welsh cob, whn i road her she seemed placid but she was bullied sumtime with her field mates (so was in a paddock on her own) I am worried this will happered again, by the rules of my yard she will not be aloud to mix with any other horses as she will be in quarenteen for 10 days, there is another mare 4yr 14.2 haflinger in there that is a bit racy and spends most of the day galloping around, i am worried this will stress my mare. However there is only one quarenteen field so she has to go in there. I have another horse and after the quarenteen time has cleared hopes to hack out with him (13yr 14.2 gelding with gd manners, mostly) to help he bond and settle, there are about 30 horses on my yard to middle sized, my other horse is a bit of a bossy boots so tends to be a loaner, i hope wif hackin wif him she will get used to him and get on with him yeah?

Once your horse is delivered, lead her first around the barn. Then, find your most laid back horses, and introduce your horse to them, by just letting them bump heads, etc. Whenever a new horse would come to the barn i rode at, they would first have the horse in a small paddock by itself, then introduce a horse, and then two. Then once the horse settled down, they would put it into the pasture. And if there is a horse that is beating up on her, then just separate them. There is always going to be that one horse that trys to control all of them! Also make sure before you go riding, to lead the horse around the whole property so she's familiar with the surroundings. It's not fun to be riding then all a sudden your horse gets spooked by a scary tree!! Good luck, and hope this helps!!

It shouldn't be a problem. Just make sure you spend time with her. Give her treats. You have to build trust. Horses are social animals. Remember they are like being with other horses and with their humans. She is young that's a good thing. Some horses get along but sometimes they don't introduce them gradually, on opposite sides of the fence. Smell is a big thing.
To make him settle and feel at home, it will take a while for him to do so. Get him on a halter and walk him. pet him gentley. Clean his stall every day. give him some treats. Let him look around the barn. If you have other horses let him get to meet them.

Just do stuff like grooming him. So he knows he will be safe in his new home.

just let him be for a few days and he'll get used the the surroundings
stroke her and be around her for awhile till she gets used to you.shell calm down when she can trust you
