New saddle discoloration

New saddle discoloration2007-11-24 21:19:19

I have a new dark brown saddle that has only been rode in a few times. As of the last time I rode in it there is a big light spot where the stirrup leather falls, it looks like caked mud but it doesn't come off. Is there any way to get rid of this?

Answers:

This may be a wear spot. Was the saddle used or exceptionally cheap? Most so-called "bargain" saddles are poorly made with cheap dyes that rub off quickly and may stain breeches. You can try oiling it with neatsfoot or another darkening oil. You may also want to contact a tack repair place or a saddle doctor to take a look at it. If the dyes and leather are inferior, though, there might not be much you can do. That's why it's worth it to buy something that's got a brand name and a reputation for quality. If your saddle IS manufactured by a major brand (HDR, Collegiate, Pessoa, Bates, etc.), you may be able to contact the manufacturer and report the problem. They may refund your money if the saddle is defective, or they may help solve your problem.

The first thing that you should do with a new saddle is give it a hot oil treatment - olive oil works the best. It will get darker and more supple. Don't ride in it right after you do it, make sure it has a chance to sink in (overnight).
How expensive was this saddle? A cheap saddle made with cheap leather and cheap dye will rub off and discolor extremely easily. Oil the saddle and the oiled area will darken. Use PURE neatsfoot oil, not neatsfoot oil compound to purposefully darken and preserve leather. Apply it in light coats and allow it to soak in. NEVER use vegetable/olive oil on a saddle!
