Watery eyes

Watery eyes2007-11-24 21:20:53

My 12 yr old appy gelding has had very watery eyes since i got him about a year ago. It is clear fluid and runs from the corners of his eyes and down the side of his face. His eyes look normal, no swelling or anything like that. What could be wrong? How can i stop it?

If this is an ongoing problem he might have blocked tear ducts that aren't functioning properly. You may need to have a vet out to check, but it is easily corrected. In the meantime get him a fly mask, especially if it seems to be a seasonal problem. As an appy, if he is white or mottled around his eye area, then he might be prone to eye irritations. Have a vet check him out to be sure.

Its probably just flies try getting role on fly spray its nothing to be too concerned about.
This sounds like a blocked naso lacrimal duct. This duct is a strawlike passage that connects the eyes and nose. Humans have it too, The duct provides a passage for tears from the eyes to drain out the nose. When the duct becomes blocked, the tears spill over the eyes and onto the cheeks. Your vet can unblock the duct by passing a very small filament tube through the duct and squirt saline through to unblock the passage. This is a very common problem.

While your vet is out, ask him/her about the possibilties of equine recurrent uveitis (moonblindess) which is common amoung appies. All my apps wear flymasks year round to protect their eyes from the sun (as sunlight is implicated in ERU).

Well it can be triggered just by flies always around him, so if he doesnt have a fly mask, get him one. If you see no improvment I would call a vet, becasue appys do have a tendancy to have bad eyes, and if its bad its going to be betters to catch it a.s.a.p.
My horse has the same thing. I flushed out his eyes and nothing came out. My vet gave him some sort of steriod. But I would flush the eyes out first. Then if that doesnt work, this may be the problem. Some sort of nasal passage is clogged and so it goes out the eye. Thats what a vet told me.
A blocked tear duct is a definite possiblity.
