What Is Wrong With My Friends Horses Hoof2007-11-24 21:21:47

My friend's horse, after her first foaling in the winter, has become semi-lame. A part of her heel had to be clipped off, and since then, my friend has been soaking that foot in warm Epsom salt, and then applying Rain Maker on all four of her hooves to keep them from drying out. There seems to be no progress with that after two weeks of treatment, so we're starting to wonder if that's not what's wrong with her. Any ideas, and any ideas on how to make it stop?

Answers:

you need to take him to the vet he prob has a abses the best thing to do is soke it in epsomsalt

I read your addendum, how long has she been lame now?

I wonder if its not a bruise, could she of kicked the wall when she was in labor? Is it a front or back hoof?

Your question is really vague... Was the horse lame before the heel clipping or after and why was the heel clipped off?

Epsom salt will dry a hoof. Salt soaks up water.

Is she soaking because there is an abcess?

Your friend needs to get some Source supplement, feed it to the horse and in 6 mths, you will see huge improvement.

It takes a whole year to grow out a hoof, improvement doesn't happen in 2 wks.

Rain Maker is a good product however.

call the farrier of the vet and have them come check it out. we had a miniature donkey that was preg and fell on the ice. she lost the baby and starting limping to really bad. we called the vet out to check things out it turned out to be white line diease they had to remove some hoff wall and put Fungidye on it. She may have a cancker too I have this is very painful. If the problem is in the frog maybe it could be thrush....rain maker is only putting more moisture into it you should use something like thrush buster to dry it out.
does the hoof smell bad and look kinda whiteish on the sole? if so it could b thrush. y was her heel clipped and by who? ..the farrier or the owner? need more details ...might can help u...
You should call the vet immediately it could be a number of things including laminitis which is very painful for the horse and is potentially deadly. A horse's hooves and legs are very delicate despite the horse as being a animal thought to be hardy. So like the saying goes no hoof no horse. Definitely contact a vet ASAP!
It could be any number of things, white line disease, corns, abscess, pedel bone rotation, the list is endless. Get a vet that deals with podiatry issues to give a second opinion because as some else said, the details provided are a bit vague
i have the farrier come out and check. could be an abcess that hasnt ruptured yet.
You can use the Power Horse Naturally Chelated Trace Minerals it is an organic and patented product to treat laminitis and work perfect as a hoof growth factor. You will find it at www.animalpowersource.com
