What Should I Do
A year ago I bought my horse from a guy who my dad sometimes does work for. Upon his purchase, the man told me that if I kept the horse there to board, all we would charge me for was feed. At first it was $100/month, then $150, and now $200! I know he is ripping me off because it only costs $70 or less to feed my horse a month and he isnt getting any supplements like grain or anything. Right now, I "owe" him $700, but I know I dont really owe him that much. What should I do? Pay him and move my horse(We are moving to a farm wtih huge pastures so I was going to move him anyway)? Or should I just take my horse and leave without paying him?
Answers:Do you have a boarding contract? In the contract it should specify how much you owe a month. Ask if you can see the recipts for the feed he has been buying too. If he can't prove that is how much he has been paying for the feed, then you don't owe him that much. You need to talk to him about the situation, tell him you will only pay what he can prove he has spent on feed for your horse. I would say it seems unlikely that he would only charge you for feed in boarding, so make sure that there is no misunderstanding, he may have said his boarding covers the cost of feed, but didn't literally you pay for the feed and thats all. You may end up having to pay him the full ammount. Even 200 dollars a month is really cheap for board.
You should check what the "going" rate for FEED for a horse is in the area. Take the horse, to avoid additional charges. THEN "negotiate" what you should pay for feed. With the horse gone you will be in a better position to negotiate. And just don't agree to more than the "going" rate, or close to it. Just keep negotiating until the guy agrees with the going rate, or close to it. Maybe your dad should be party to the negotiations, you don't want to affect his ability to get work from this guy. Double check with your dad before you do any of this. If the guy is ripping you off and your dad does not want to upset his work relation, tell your dad he should pay the difference between going rate and what this guy charged you.
Geez that sux if I were you i would talk to the guy if that dont work see if your parents can talk to him or if you have proof he is scamming you take it to the police or simply move your horse w/o paying. hope this helps
Honestly, in order to avoid a hige lawsuit and problms for your father I would move the horse now, but pay the guy.
Did you sign a contract of any type? If you did it could state if you own money the horse is the boarding barns property until fees are paid, be careful he could file a stolen horse, even though it is yours.
