What ages or for how many years can a horse show-jump2007-11-24 21:21:01
Hi, Just looking for information for a story I'm writing. Any help would be great!
Answers:Well it really depends on when they started and how healthy/sound they are. Generally if horses are started jumping young then they wont jump past 16-17... if also depends on frequency... etc... But I'd say a horse will last with some light jumping (not 4 star events haha) about ages 6-17 JUST A ROUGH idea
it depends on thetrainer and the horse, i know a paint who is already show jumping at aroun 2' and he is only four, and oldest, well i would never jump a horse past 16
Smile is right between 3 and max 15 years
Depends on the care they receive. At our barn we had two ponies that still showed in their 30's, and a couple horses still did big shows into their late 20's. Horses don't usually compete in the Olympics until their late teens. They don't tend to start jumping until they are 3 or 4, but Dressage is actually harder on young horses than jumping is. Ponies usually outlive horses, and the bigger the horse, the earlier his death, usually.
I guess that depends on the horse itself and the environment it is around. A horse with proper care and training could last longer than a neglected horse learning to jump. You cant really decide untill the time comes where you know when the horse cannot jumo anymore. Some times the horse may not jump due to malnurishment (sorry I dont know how to spell that) in the legs after a little while, whereas others may be suceptible to injury. You really cant decide how long a horse can jump until you just know or other scenarios. As for age in professional jumping, I would guess in it's mid teens with proper treatment because its legs can just "give out" after a while. If its just fun jumping or your standard 4-H jumping, then it could do it into its late 20's i reckon.
You have to remember that horses are like politics and religion - everyone has an opinion.
Good luck on your story.
