Answers:

draw reins run from the girth between the horses frint legs trough the ring on the bit to the riders hands

they are used as a 'schooling aid' as an extra measure of controll to help keep the horses head in the correct place

unless you know exactly what you are doing they can cause more harm than help [and increased vets bills]

there are no short cuts when schooling horses

The terms "draw reins" and "running reins" are often used interchangeably in the English disciplines. The terms most often refer to reins which go from the rider's hand, through one bit ring (outside to inside), and attach to the girth. Usually this style is called a "running rein," though the term "draw rein" is also sometimes used. Some styles attach directly to a regular snaffle rein, which limits the degree of force applied, while others slide freely and with little limit to the leverage that can be applied. Another style, also called a "draw rein," runs from the rider's hands, through the bit ring (outside to inside), over the poll, through the other bit ring, and back to the rider's hands, without attaching to the girth.

In Hunt seat style English riding, these devices originally developed as a two-rein bitting system. One set of reins is an ordinary direct snaffle rein, and the other is the running or draw rein. The rider holds these reins in a manner similar to a double bridle, usually with the snaffle rein below the fourth finger and the running or draw rein between the third and fourth fingers, although there are variations on this. When riding in this fashion, the rider should ride predominantly on the snaffle rein. However, riders and trainers may often be observed using only the running or draw rein, in many cases with the snaffle rein completely absent from the bridle. Riding with draw reins alone is a controversial practice among English riders.

Draw reins pull on the bit in the horse's mouth and help the horse to know where the rider wants to go.
Draw reins are used for correcting the horses profile and topline by getting the head down and in. Running reins are bascially the same but are attached differently. In polo they can be straight or crossed over the withers before attaching to the saddle. In the wrong hands though, they can cause all kinds of problems including the horse becoming overbent and behind the bit. They usually have loops on the end so you place the reins over the withers and run them on the outside of all the tack to the bit, pass through the bit (outside to inside) and then run back under all the tack such as a martingale neck band or breastplate . At the withers, you can either cross them or leave them straight and then they attach to the first girth strap on your saddle.
Im english and it helps to get an outline from your horse which makes his head curve hoope this helps xx
When you pull back with normal reins on a snaffle bit, you apply pressure directly from your horse's mouth in a straight line to your hands. It takes time and repeition for your horse to learn what he needs to do to have that pressure released. My show horses are trained that when I apply pressure with my heels first and then direct pressure with the reins, they are to lower their neck and tuck their head slightly in. (I ride Paints both Western and English) But this is a trained response, because I'm actually wanting them to lower their heads to my tightening of the rein.
