What are some good kid horses2007-11-24 21:21:07

I am looking for a kid horse to buy. What breeds do you coinsider and how much are they?

Answers:

I would consider a Quarter Horse, Paint Horse, or a pony. My family has a Tennessee Walker but I would say Tennessee Walkers are only for experienced horse people. Any popular breed would be great for children. It doesn't really matter the breed but those are the breed I personally would recommend (and I have ridden a lot!) I also do not recommend a horse under 6 or 7 for children. Younger horses can be very spirited and quite a handful. Do NOT get a stallion either. They can be very unpredictable for a child. Make SURE the horse is bombproof. Like on a chart 1(clam)-10(highly spirited) ask what the horse would be on the chart. 1-3 would be great for children. You can get a horse anywhere from free-whatever price. We spent $900 on our horse but that was because he was a rescue from Hurricane Katrina. I do not recommend rescues for children either. They can also be pretty unpredictable with the abuse/neglect they have been through. You have to set a price range and go by it. We set a price range of $500-$2000 and we found a nice horse for $900. Look in your local newspaper and you can look at a local rescue but make sure the horse is not green broke or under saddle. Here are some sites where you can search a horse locally and by price..

the welsh mountain is know to be a good kids horse.
Any breed can work as long as the horse is of sound and safe mind. I would highly recommend an older gelding-although I have a younger mare who is a dream babysitter that I paid $600.00 to beat the "killers" last year. She is the exception to the rule, however. I would seek out older "stock" type horses without alot of "get up and go" mentality who "stop" when scared versus "bolt out the door" Seek out a horse that already has been used by kids-such as an older lesson horse. You can pay anywhere from $1200 and up for such a broke horse-but please don't be cheap and buy a young, green horse when it comes to your children's safety.
I agree with Vagrant. As long as the horse is bombproof and gentle, any breed should work.
Breeds really dont matter, any breed would work, as long as they are sound
Breed has nothing to do with it I think but how the horse is trained. I dont like ponies of any sort for kids they get to tempermental. I like small horses which is normaly a mix breed of a pony and soemthing else. As for price i just sold a mare that i used to lead through parades with a 4 yr old on her that had never been on a horse before and she was bred as well i only got $230 for her and the grey gelding I sold went for $130 so right now prices are supper low. I will say get a trainer to give lesson to you and your child. Then after a couple months ask them to help you find a horse to buy at auction. They might not like going to an auction but alot of good horses are being sold through auctions right now because the bottom has fallen out of horses. Just try and make sure the auction you go to has some area to try the horse in first. IF your in my area I would be more then happy to help you
i would probably consider morgans. they are spirited under saddle but very calm & easy to handle in hand. usually a non-show horse cist around 2,000$-5,000$
Quarter horses, paints, and appaloosas tend to be good children's horses. Arabs are normally too spirited.
