What are the advantages and disadvantages of using a crupper when you are only riding on med to stee2007-11-24 21:21:11

My husband was wanting to add a crupper to his saddle. We only normally ride our horses on semi steep terrain. I have never had the problem of my saddle slipping but he thinks we should add them. I think it might make for some aggrevated horses. We wanted to get some opinions on here from anyone who has ever used them and what they thought. I appreciate your time and help in this.

There are no disadvantages if one is needed. As stated, a narrow shouldered horse where the saddle tends to slip forward, riding up onto the wither, this is when you want a crupper. If the saddle does not slip forward, there is no need for one. A 3 way breastcollar helps keep the saddle centered (helps with the saddle rolling from side to side) and keeps the saddle from slipping too far back. (I use them on every horse) With proper saddle fit, most of these situations can be greatly reduced, however, in some extreme cases you definately need something extra. Again, make sure, if you use a crupper/breastcollar, make sure they are fitted correctly.

Hope this helps.

I've done a few endurance rides with moderately steep inclines and have never used a breastcollar (tho I've really needed it on occasion) or a crupper. Yes, it may aggrivate a horse at first, but like everything else...they'll get used to it. Although, if you've never had a problem with your saddle slipping, you shouldn't really worry too much. Now, if you're going to be riding the Tevis, then I could see you needing one.
