What are the best fly/bug rugs
i have horses who all rub or find flies really annoying. have tried lots of potions/lotions/sprays they dont really work. am now thinking rugs are the way to go but i dont want horses getting to hot. which do you consider the best? or any fly sprays home or bought will work, although ive probably tried them. thanks
Answers:I have a horse with sweet itch and I've tried them all. The only really good one, doesn't make the horse hot, doesn't rub, washes easily and fits well, I even ride my horse with her wearing it, is the Boett rug made in Sweden I think. Available mail order from Horses Etc tel 01352 771718 for more info or they have a website I think. Boett rugs aren't cheap but last about 3 years and my horse wears it 9 months of the year.
This is the best thing we've found for a horse with allergies to no-see-ums.

I use a horsewear bug rug, it has a full neck which attaches to a head collar to keep it in place and covers most of the belly with double surcingles. You also get a full face mask with it.
My boy is a grey and it has the added bonus of keeping him clean too!!
They are all made of ripstop mesh so are pretty cool, although Its hard to tell just yet seeing as summer seems to have done a runner!
I also make my own fly spray and spray it all over the rug and mask.
