What are the legal requirements for a vehicle being used to pull a trailer carrying horses2007-11-24 21:21:13

I remember it used to be that as long as the vehicle was powerful enough it could be anything, i:e, a family saloon could be used. But a few years ago, i remember this changed. Can anyone clarify please?

Answers:

simply, you can't tow a load that is heavier than the towing vehicle unless you have 4 wheel drive. It's a bit more complex than that but in effect that means no saloons because any trailer with a horse in it weighs more than any 2 wheel drive vehicle I know, unless you have a transit van maybe.

Remember that it's not pulling it thats the problem, it's STOPPING it

Depends on the state (due to variances in state law) What state are you in, and what type of vehicle do you want to pull the trailer with? And what type, length, weight of trailer are you looking to pull? How many horses in the trailer?

I don't know if it's a hard and fast legal requirement but in the UK it's recommended by the caravanning clubs that the fully laden trailer shouldn't weigh more than 90% of the towing vehicles weight. Obviously this wouldn't apply to HGV's and the like which are specifically designed for heavy pulling.
