What are traditional horse color combinations
I am trying to decide what color tack to buy for my horse. I want to get hunter green accoutrements, because I like the way they look with a chestnut. But what color leather should I go for, for the horse and myself? I'm into hunter jumper and pleasure riding mainly, with a little casual interest in dressage.
Answers:Hunter - If you are doing the hunt stick to a dark brown. As a judge I was asked to keep in mind that the sport was very 'traditional' so being flashy means avoiding anything white (Which I have seen!) or too dark. Your bridle should match the saddle as closely as possible. As for the saddle pad,... White! White will make you as the rider stand out, and since you are required to wear the hunt pad in competition you will likely only find it in white. Please verify with your coach the requirements for tack in your division.
As a Jumper you get to play around a little more, you can have a seperate tack assortment, including colored pads (Baby blue will stand out) and polos/boots.
Dressage - White pads and wraps, black tack.
In stable - Sarah C is right on lol
For hunter, brown is the traditional favorite... I'd recommend avoiding black, it's not too popular and I don't think you're going to find many black jumping saddles anyway.
A medium brown color looks awesome with hunter green. I used to have a chestnut colored bridle with hunter green padding, it was gorgeous.
I also would like to recommend brown. But the dark dark brown... it looks great on chestnuts and will match most of all horses. saddles usually come in that color and girths are easier to match...
