What bit should I use on my gelding2007-11-24 21:21:17

He is a six year old thoroughbred, just off the track and I am retraining him for the hunter jumpers. Right now, I am using a slow twist eggbutt, but I need something a little harsher. He rounds well, turns, stops, etc but it takes ALOT of muscle to do it and I'm tired of having burning arms all the time. I want something that will bring him back and make him respect the bit more so that I can work him back to the slow twist in time. Thanks for all your helpful answers!

In all my years of working and training horses there is One bit company that makes a great bit for bring a horse back. I have had horse that i had to fight with to get any thing out of and 5 mins with his bit and the horse got it like that. and I would say 75% for the horses i could put back in a soft bit 2 to 4 mos later.

i have an 8 year old tb mare, had some of the same issues as you.lol. but i use a copper roller dee on her and it works really well. something else you could always try is to go to a consignment tack shop and sometimes they will let you take bits home for a few days to find what works best

try a level 1 Myler (maybe a barrel dee or low port dee) or move up to a level 2.

I use a "wonder bit." It looks like a big snaffle with extra rings attached. Works differently depending on where you hook the reins. I think it's a nice mild bit that has the ability of letting the horse learn respect w/o being too harsh.

You do not want to result to a harsher bit , this will only make things worse. If you go with a harsher bit , it will be even harder to change him to one that is softer in the long run. You need to take him back to basics and teach him to give to the softer bit.

I have a just of the track TB too and i typically use a reg. eggbutt. But if I feel like shes pushen too hard i use a kimberwick (spelling lol sry) with the rein on the last hole.
