I am looking to buy a roping saddle. Who are some good saddle makers? Are there any brands that I should stay away from? Are the "name brands" worth all the hype? Thanks!

In my opinion, the big names like Circle Y, TexTan and Billy Cook are not worth it. You are paying for the name. I bought a Dakota saddle which I am VERY pleased with. I get a ton of compliments on it from people who own Circle Ys and Billy Cooks. It was only about $750 after I upgraded to a flex-tree. They are semi-customizable too, so once you pick out what style you want you can then pick out yours bars, leather and seat color, silver packages and leather engraving. They are not mass produced, they make each saddle by hand to your specifications. I got mine through the culturedcowboy.com. They are in SC and you cannot find Dakota saddles for a better price anywhere, believe me I looked. Talk to a guy named Chuck.he knows a TON about saddles and can walk you through the ordering process. I did have to wait 6 weeks to get mine because the demand was so high, but it was well worth it!

My husband and I both team rope and for the money, Tesky's saddle shop in Weatherford Texas makes one called a Tesky's Custom Two roping saddle. It is designed to to allow you to team rope or calf rope. We have four of them and love them. They fit well, are very durable, look nice, and are reasonably price at $800. Some of our team roping buddies from other states have ridden them at our barn and then ordered one for themselves. Good Luck
