What can I do for my horses that are being stalled outdoors right now
They are on sand and dirt and I clean their stalls every day. But I cannot remember the name of that stuff you can put on the ground to help with diseases or infections on their hoofs from standing in the mud and dirt. It has been raining alot here so we have not had much dry weather. I think it helps absord the moisture as well.
Answers:Wood pellets will absorb the moisture. Woody Pet is one name brand, but there are several brands. They look just like a grain pellet, only they are made of wood. If you are in a dry stall, you add water. If you are in a moist stall, don't add water, they will absorb the moisture already there and break down to a sawdust.
Lyme is used for urine spots and whatnot, but won't help to dry your stall if it continues to rain.
Shavings? Is that what you need. Are the horses covered?
One of my horses is pasture boarded. It is so rainy and mucky out there, they literally dony have a escape from it unless its dry, and there is a patch of land outside from the tie stalls that is dry. Otherwise its litterally a mound of poop. You probably dont need it unless you continually take them out, give them exersize.
I use iodine to keep my horses hooves dry. it also prevents thrush.
Get something called Thrush Buster to help with their feet. Make sure you give them sand clear to keep sand out of their gut. Keratex is another great hoof product but is expensive.
bleach works very well with preventing thrush
are you talking about shavings that's wat we use
there are a variety of products that are large chipped woods.must not use just any wood though as some are toxic to horses.SOME HAVE BEEN CHIPPED WITH OLD NAILS STILL IN SOME MUST BE A HORSE PRODUCT..go to a site called mallard creek to look at the type of product available but these are general specific to your geographic region.bad very bad for horses to eat off sand though ...they will ingest it and get sand colic.horses must be given a dry place to stand...they should not be in a pile Of poop as previous answer states.keeping hoof chemical treated does not prevent all the skin infections that are an issue!!
pine shavings... you can also get bedding pellets that absorb moisture, but they last a lot longer than shavings
Are you talking about that white powder that you sprinkle on the ground? I believe it is called lyme powder. It is a big help...
I don't know about the ground, but I use Coppertox or Thrushbuster on the hooves after I pick them out.
we use aspen shavings they are not too big so they last longer with the picking of the pens and it will help also use some thrush treatments.
