What can I do while I cannot ride2007-11-24 21:21:20

I was injured falling off my dad's horse in January (jumping) and I can't ride until at least November. Does anyone have any ideas of what I can do while I can't ride? I have a rising 6yo QH x ASH who I was going to train to drive but I don't have quite enough time for that. I need something that could keep Louie (my horse) reasonably fit if possible, but I'm open to all ideas. Thanks!

I think driving is your best bet. Don't give up on that one. Driving a horse develops the hindquarters and teaches them to engage over the hocks in a most wonderful way. It also works wonders for a good neck and head set. I love to drive a young horse before it is broken to ride and especially love it for gaited and sport horses. I think that most horses these days miss out on this aspect of training and in the past almost every horse was broken to drive.

If you can't physically do the training, it would be worth it to pay someone else to.

Wow, I'm kind of in the same boat as you..only I got ran over by a Chevy Blazer while we we're hooking up a hay wagon, so am also layed up with a young horse that needs breaking and my other one that needs to keep in shape..So far just spending a lot of time brushing them and playing around with their heads etc...you could put yours in a round pen and work them that way..I don't have 1 so every now and then they run and play with the dogs when they're not mauling me to brush them..Or just attention..Although I think I only have a month left(hope) Or you could have some trusted friend or family ride them for you..we also do that with my friends extras..Take care and good luck...
