What can I do with an associates degree in equine studies
What jobs can I get, or what can I go on to study?
Thanks.
Answers:An associates, or any degree in equine studies won't get you far unless you have a ton of experience, competitive accomplishments and connections with other horse people. In the horse industry, your degree doesn't mean a whole lot, people care about what you have done, who you know, and what you have won. You could go on to get a buisness degree, and this would help you get a job as a barn manager or something along these lines. Plus, with a buisness degree you would have something to fall back on if you changed your mind about working with horses. An associates could also make you a stand out candidate for a trainer to take on as an apprentice. Apprenticing, in my opinion, gives you practical experiance that you can not learn in a class room. It will also give you good connections.
I recently was looking for someone to work with one of my horses that I dont have time for, I had one girl bragging about her certification in riding instruction and degree in equine science, and the another candidate had tons show experiance, and worked with a well known trainer, of course I picked the second girl.
If you dont have the hands on work experience, not a whole lot.Like the first person who answered said, what we look for in the horse world is the work behind the paper. If someone walked into your barn and said that theyd been to J&W and have an Assoc. degree & had 3.5 years of college riding and SOME lessons while they were a teenager, though no actual management experience but wanted the job, or someone whos got 8 years of solid work experience and the attitude to back it up,I hope you would have the sense to hire the one with the experience. An associates degree in the equine field, with out the work that comes with it,isnt worth much.
