What can I expect to pay to have a young (13 mo) miniature stallion gelded2007-11-24 21:21:21

We have had this fella for less than a month; he has become more difficult to handle as time goes on. I am thinking it is time to have him gelded; will this settle his aggressiveness some, and what can I expect to pay? I am in TN.

Thanks.

It depends on where you live as far as costs go, and also if the mini is cryptorchid or not. To have a vet come to you and castrate a normal stallion in the field should realisitically be around $100-$200 depending on your area of TN and the costs around there. To haul in to a vet, you'd probably save around $50 or so, which would be the farm call fee the travelling vet would charge. Don't know how far the University of Tennessee is from you, but you can call them and ask and get an appointment set up to have a vet come to you or for you to go to the vet. Either way, be sure your vet has successful experience castrating minis, too.

DEFINITELY CASTRATE HIM !! It will take a little while for whatever testosterone in his system to pass, but his attitude will change for the better, and with the correct discipline, he should make a very nice gelding. There is no need to have a mini stallion around at all.

I would call your vet for a accurate number, but I paid $100 for my donkey to get gelded. Best money I ever spent on my little man.

Oh yeah good point on the ranch call to the poster below me, my $100 was to haul to the vet.

You will most likely see a big change in attitude after he is gelded. Around here gelding (at your place) will run under $150. Personally I prefer to do it before or after the worst of heat and fly season. Listen to your vets instructions on follow up care, especially the hosing. Once the hormone levels drop you'll notice alot of his difficult behavior/ attitude will be gone too. Good luck.
Anywhere from 200 to 400 dollars has been my experience. If all goes well and there are no complications 200 most likely.
wow this makes me love our vet, he only charged me $60 to geld my 2yr. :o) so id call your vet, prices depend on the vet, location, state etc. im in a little farm town in kansas so that is why mine is cheaper
