What can make my horses happy

I have two older horses( in their 20s). I spend about 1-2 hours a day with them, feeding & mucking out and petting them . I check on them once in the morning for about 30-45 minutes and in the evening I spend about an hour feeding and picking out their feet and stuff. They aren't riding horses, just for maintenance, but when I go out there they look sad. I even bought them an apple toy that has those lick things in it so they can have a treat during the day or whenever, but they dont pay any attention to it. THey don't even touch cut up apples or carrots I bring out to them. They are pastured horses, always have been, always will be. What am I doing wrong? Is there anything I can do to make them happier? I don't have any other horses, so it is just those 2 I have. Could they just be sick of being the only two horses ? or could it be because I have only had them since May of 2007, so about 3 months.

They sound bored to me. I think what you need to do is spend a little or a lot more time with them. Groom them and talk to them and make them look forward to seeing you every day by giving them a horse cookie when you go out in the morning. You may need to buy a little buddy for them---a goat, or a donkey or a pony or another horse. Before you make the big buy, be sure that the critter and the horses get along okay.

Also your horses might be sick. Are their eyes and coats bright? You should maybe consult your vet to see what's up.
