What do I do about my horse show jitters
I have a show in a few weeks and it's I'm doing a few cross country courses. I'm really excited for it, but nervous at the same time. I have an AMAZING horse to ride who I trust will take care of me. I'm extremely nervous about remembering my course, though. I know I can do it, I just get nervous and may forget the course. Luckily this isn't a very big show, it's hosted by my instructor, but she told me that the course is "four lines". What does she mean by four lines? I defenetly think positive, and it has really helped me! What should I do? I have a lesson on August 1st and I was going to ask my instructor to quickly give me a course to remember then and try to do it right then, do you think that will help? My show is on August 11th, and i really hope to get a lesson in a few days before the show, too. I'm not nervous about the actual jumping, I've gotten very good, I'm just nervous about the memorization. Please help me! Thanks :)
Answers:Whenever I get scared or nervous about a show, I always take a deep breath and try to relax and think that I'm there to have fun. It usually works, unless of course there is a big jackpot at stake, then I nothing can get rid of the nerves. To help remember the course, I always take one obsticle at a time when I look at the course on a piece of paper. Then after I have gone over every obsticle, I go over the course again, then I close my eyes and go through it in my head and that seems to do the trick for me. Something else that might help is to have a friend quiz you on the course. Good Luck at your show!!
You'll be fine. You will most likely have the opportunity to walk the course before you jump it, and once you've walked around the course you aren't going to forget it. Cross-country courses are a lot easier to memorize than showjumping courses because the jumps all look different and the terrain all looks different, so you're less likely to get mixed up.
(Plus, unless it's a SUPER small show, the jumps will be numbered.)
