What do horse grooms do at fancy shows2007-11-24 21:21:26

I am going with my stable to a fancy show but I can't afford to ride so I offered to help out and be kinda like a groom?

I'm sure someone will let you know what they expect you to do, but generally, a 'groom' may do some or all of the following:

Groom horses

tack up horses for hacking or showing

wait ringside with exhibitor - wipe off rider's boots, polish horse's hooves and coat before entering ring, and clean off any foam from the horse's bits and wipe down face and legs just before entering the ring. After the class, the groom will loosen girths, blanket and hotwalk the horse if necessary.

polish rider's boots

make sure riders have correct numbers

remove boots on horse between warmup and hunter classes, where they are not allowed.

clean and rebed stalls

help with setup of stalls and tack room

feed and fill water buckets. Scrub buckets

Keep stall or trailer area clean

Make sure riders are ready when their class is called

Warmup/cool down horses if appropriate

braid manes/tails if capable

Have fun, and wear comfortable clothes and shoes! You'll probably be working hard! Ask the riders and other grooms what you will be expected to do. Sometimes riders will be responsible for their own horses, often you will bring the horse to them tacked up and ready to show, they get on and ride in the ring, then you are responsible for the horse after the class is finished. Since you've never been a 'groom' before, you may find yourself doing odds and ends and watching the others to gain experience.

i have been riding for 7 years. at "fancy shows" the groom braids the horses mane and tail, grooms the horse very well, tacks it up, and bathes it after the show, brushes it down again, poltices, and puts it away. hope this helps. have fun and good luck! :)
