What do u think of Economix for my horse2007-11-24 21:21:27

well we have decided to try feeding my standardbred (whos is not getting ridden much due to weather) Economix. I caught my horse in the morning and went past my indoor and he went nuts just cause some lady was riding her horse in there...i have no idea what his problem was he has been around horses all his life and all the lady was doing was trotting around?? I dont wanna get to the point where i cant ride him cause hes nuts! Me n my mum have decided to try Economix cause we fed it to my 4 yr old TB mare when she was nuts and she was great on it turned her into a sweetie. What do u think??

if your horse is not in work why are you feeding him. Horse only need more energy putting in if they are using it up. if your horse is a good weight then good quality grass or hay should be enough if he is underweight then a low energy condition mix may help. When using econ mixes beware of the peas in them as they can excite the quietest horse. Only start to introduce hard food when your horse is in full work and doesn't have the energy you are asking for. if you want to feed him so you can catch him the i would just give him a small amount of chaff with some greens. eware of laminates it isn't only ponies that get it also if you are feeding to much energy beware of azortoria(tie up).

is this recently or been happening for a while? Are you feeding him any sweet feed or oats? If he's not being ridden and your feeding him either sweet feed or oats, its making him hyper. Its like giving a kid candy for breakfast and expecting them to sit quietly in church. Because standardbreds are hot blooded animals, sweet feed, oats or anything like that is going to make them hyper, especially if they're in a stall and not working off the pent up energy.

I feed my horse Economix when he is in work and this keeps him in good condition. However, if you want a low energy feed, try Copra (on the packet it says "Cool Fuel"). It is coconut extract and you wet it down (because it expands heaps) before feeding it to your horse. Since your horse may have raced it may just get upset when it sees other horses moving and wants to go with it.
