deffinatly use your calves. but also, depending on how your horse is (like if he is a slow polk) you should loosen your riens. Well, really, you should do that anyways so that your horse doesnt get a mixed message of go and stay at the same time. were i used to ride, all of the ponies needed a hard kick and some even needed to have a little smack on the butt with a riding crop. with my horse, all i have to do is let the riens go slack and he will pick up speed almost emediatly.

So think about all of these and see which one may apply to your horse the best.

P.S. Always talk to your horse while riding. It helps them to relax. when you ask for a different pace, tell it too him. (say walk, trot, exct) also, if your horse needs some encouragement, cluck or kiss to him. it works like a charm on my horse.
