You want to look at the other horses there and make sure that they all look healthy, happy and in good weight. Also make sure that you don't see any obvious dangers to either you or the horses. Check to make sure there is ample turnout with good grass and that the fences are all safe and intact. Depending on what dicipline you are riding you will want to make sure they have the faculities that you'll need ex:) a dressage arena, a jumping arena with jumps, etc. Find out about their schedule, feeding & turnout and make sure that it would work for you and your horse. You may want to talk to some of the other boarders too and see how they feel about the place and how accomidating the barn manager is to your horses needs.
I look at the overall health and condition of the horses and if they seem happy. I also look at the condition of the barn and property.chances are if they take care of it, they will take care of your horse. I also like having a ring and riding trails. My main concern is turn out time.I like my horses to be out 24 hours a day in a small group with access to a run in shed. I don't care much for having a stall, but it is nice to have one available in case of an emergency or extreme weather conditions. Also, a friendly staff is crucial. You could be at the nicest barn in the area, but if the staff is rude or thinks they are better than you (which I run into sometimes because for some reason show trainers and riders think they know more or are better riders because I am just a pleasure rider), it will make your boarding experience miserable. Overall, I look for a place where my horses will be most comfortable, which means large grassy pastures with some shade, shelter and some friends.
Good answers! Also, look at the stalls, are they clean? Level? Any barbed wire on the premises? You can also ask the local shoers, they will tell ya weather its an upstanding stabe....
Good answers so far, I would only add that if you're a pleasure rider, you may feel out of place at a "show" barn, and to check their security and risk management policies. Check with law enforcement to see if they get frequent complaints about loose horses, loud parties, etc.
I agree with the others. Look at other horses on the property. Are they in good condition and approachable? Is the property maintained well or are things falling apart or dangerous? What type of feed is used? Does each horse get the amount it needs? Is clean water always available? Are the other boarders decent people or are you concerned about your safety there? Do the stable hours fit your needs? Are you willing to abide by the stable's rules? Can you afford the board and any extras that are needed? Are all the horses on a worming and vaccination schedule? Can you use your own vet and farrier if you wish?
