What do you really know about DMSO
Do you really know what DMSO is and how it is used now-a-days? Or how long it has actually been used?
Answers:I still use DSMO. As a matter of fact for the longest time only vets had the stuff and it was only a matter of several years ago that it was produced and made available for people.
I do use gloves when I apply it if I use it in an ointment as a rub for a tendon or ligament issue. If I have to spread it on and rub it on a leg then that's when I use gloves.
I also use DSMO on splints. I use either the gel or liquid and rub it on the splint using a soft toothbrush. I do not shave the hair first.
I've had horses for over 40 years and always have a bit of DMSO on hand. I don't remember a time when there was no DSMO so I have to assume that it has been around for the last 40 years anyway.
As the poster above has mentioned, DSMO does get into the tissues. When you put a rub on your horse it sits just in the first couple of layers of skin and really doesn't get to the area you are interested in. When you mix the product with a bit of DSMO, the DSMO carries the product deeper into the body so that the tissue can be affected. That is one of the purposes of using it.
"It is frequently used to treat muscular, tendinous, or joint sprains and strains, and/or to carry other medications, such as corticosteroids, into such injured areas."

I dont' know about horses, but I know it is wonderful on humans as long as once applied you cover it. It's got to be great for the horse.
Aside from being an industrial solvent, DMSO was at one time widely used as a liniment or post-workout leg rub for racehorses. Dimethyl Sulfoxide, which is what the DMSO stands for, has some local analgesic properties (i.e., kills pain on areas where it is applied) and has been shown in some cases to reduce swelling caused by bruising and to resolve bruised areas quickly.
