A young woman at my boarding facility has a 7 year old Q.H that she barrel raced and was quit good. Unfortunately the horse went blind last year, so she had to retire him.

We put him in a small pasture with a 32 year old TB mare, that stepped up and became the Q.H's eyes. It's an amazing thing to watch, The old Thoroughbred leads him to the water bucket and to the best grass patches.

This summer the young woman started riding him again, trail rides, practising barrel racing and the horse is doing it as good as when he was able to see (I think that is an amazing bound between person and horse)

Answers:

that IS amazing! the QH will be really distressed when the TB dies, so for now, let them be together as much as possible. and dont work the horse too much... if he's on a trail ride and he trips, it could be very serious. also, if he hears something that he doesn't recognize and he cant see what it is, he will freak out. Just so you know... its a really touching story

God I love horses. I have a friend with a blind horse,and she even trail rides him! She talks to him and is his eyes,because he trusts her.

Incredible! That is trust and bond that hopefully never gets broken! I pray for them to have clean, safe runs so that bond stays intact!

Horses are amazing animals, if they have your trust,they will go out of their way to help you.I had 32 horses of my own,plus a boarding facility.I have seen similar situations,the bonds between people & horses,& horses & horses,are very heart wrenching in a certain way.I think your story is very touching.I like it.Thanks my day has started off good.

Wow, that is incredible. It is amazing how horses can adapt to many changes in their lives, good and bad.
