What is a gymkhana
I used to do gymkhanas every weekend as a kid in the summer. They are mounted games plus some jumping. They usually have classes like the potato race, flag race, sack race, Gretna green (partners dressed as bride and groom) and a chase me charlie. Everyone line up at a single fence and jumps it. If you refuse, knock it down or run out, you are eliminated. On each round the fence goes up higher and higher until there is a winner. There is also clear round jumping, you jump the course and provided you get a clear round, you get a rosette - everyone's a winner. They do lead rein classes and then it gets split into either ages or pony size. It gets very competitive and the Pony Club have a competition where each branch around the country puts together a team to compete for the Prince Philip Cup. A good gymkhana pony can cost a lot of money. Prizes are usually about $25 for a 1st and you get things like saddle soap, a new girth, stuff like that. Best fun ever and great for kids to learn.

Gymkhana is the action packed, precision sport of the equestrian world. A good Gymkhana horse must have the speed of a race horse, the turning quickness and agility of a cutting horse and the control and responsiveness of the stock horse. The word `Gymkhana' is thought to have originated in India, probably meaning 'games on horseback'.
