What is a horses average lifespan
Mid-twenties is about par for a horse that has received good care throughout its life and has an owner willing to baby it at the end.
A lot depends on how the horse was cared for when it was young. A horse that was not dewormed on a regular basis when it was young can suffer damage to the digestive system that can result in colic in later life. This is one reason why it is SO important to have your horse wormed regularly. Once a heavy parasite load is built up, damage can be permanent.
Also true: the older your horse gets, the more important it is to have his teeth taken care of. The cheek teeth, the ones that the horse chews with, can wear unevenly, affecting the horse's ability to chew his food and even resulting in painful ulcers to the inside of the mouth because of sharp edges and points. By the time a horse is up into its teens, it needs to be seen by an equine dental specialist at least once a year; twice is even better. The specialist will exam the teeth and rasp off ("float") the uneven and sharp spots.
It's also true that longevity in horses is at least partly a function of heredity. If your horse has a sire or dam that lasted into their late twenties or early thirties, the chances are better that your horse is going to last that long too.
It depends on the breed. The most popular and one of the oldest breeds, the Arabian, can live into their 30s. For other breeds, I would say the average life span is between 18-27 years.
They are considered old when their up to 17+, but I have heard of horses living well past 30 years old. It usually depends on how well they are taken care of with diet, exercise and overall care.
i have 2 horses and my mom had 2 when she was a kid, and they live about the longest of 30 years.
Depending on breed, management and environment, the domestic horse today has a life expectancy of 25 to 30 years.
I personally know many horses well into their 30s who are still active. I know an arabian cross who's well into her 40s and still living a good life, I have heard of many arabians being in their 40s. But on the average, 20 years is about what most get to due to the particular health issues horses are prone to.
25 to 30 years. I once met a man that had a horse live to be about 40.
