What is a safe ointment on open wounds for foals2007-11-24 21:21:32

I have furizone, but I'm not sure if it is ok to put on my 3.5 month filly. She has a spot the size of a quarter where the skin has rubbed off, and it is red and raw. What can I do for it and is Furizone safe?

Answers:

sure furizone is safe for your filly but it does not do a very good job with scaring so I would try to get something else like Cut Heal for it to heal with minimal scaring. Good Luck

Furizone is safe for foals I am using it now on a month old that sliced her rear leg open.
Try Neosporin...I have used it many of my animals. Hope your filly gets better!
Sure it is safe, but their is a furizone powder that works even better.
I use Aloe Heal from Farnam. Good luck!
i have used furizone..also i cover any open wounds with aloe heal by farnam or bag balm.. the old time favorite. :) just keep the wound covered so it cannot get infected. clean it often.
Neosporin is really good. it heals everything and helps the regrowth of hair. furizone often stains the skin and makes the hair duller when it grows back on younger foals. it's good stuff, but neosporin is better for overall healing
First of all, make sure you wash it! This is the most important thing to do!! Because it is only the size of a quarter, you do not need to wrap it. If it gets infected, put on some hydrogen peroxide and let it bubble, then wash it off. You can also put triple antibiotic ointment on it. This really helps!!
what i have used with my horses is something called Blu-Kote. it keeps infections from forming and it is used to heal minor abrasions and wounds. i would wrap it after u use the stuff because my horse tries to lick it off. :P
Furizone is pretty nasty stuff and should only be used if the wound must heal slowly from the inside out. That is not the case here. I would suggest teatree oil or even good old fashioned scarlet oil. Your filly's skin will be find without any intervention at all, actually. Just keep an eye on it and keep it clean with VERY warm water soaks three to four times a day. It will hlep with the bonding also, and that is always a good thing.
swat is pretty good, it keeps flies away so the area can heal.
