What is a swingle tree2007-11-24 21:21:32

i know it has to do with carts and carriages

Answers:

A swingle tree. is on a driving cart of carriage between the

shafts, the horse or pony has a leather harness which

has two leather straps either side called the trace's these

are attached to the swingle tree so the horse pulls the

cart along. It is called a swingle tree because as the

horse walks or trots it swings from side to side with the

action of the horse's shoulders.

theres no such thing look it up online
heehee, good name

but I've no idea

Its called single tree.

Its what you hook your traces too for the animal to pull the cart.

If theres a team, its a double tree etc.

Hehe I'm american :) but thats interesting about the other term, never knew that.

Florayg email me, have info about UK mules for you....

Dunno what the americans call it but swingle tree is correct. It's the bar that the traces are attached to which connects the horse to the carriage. I think the name comes from the fact that its loose and can swing, but not sure about that. Any good diagram of a horse in harness should show how it works. IN Britain anyway, a pair in harness have two swingle trees.
florayg is correct.. Swingle tree is the correct word for the part of the carriage that the traces are hooked to.
it to do with the shaft of the cart and how it can be adjusted to the horse and pony.
It also has something to do with safety and comfort for the pony. but I can't remember what. I know never to drive a pony in a vehicle without one.
A swingle tree is connected to the carriage and the traces are connected to each end of the swingle tree. a swingle tree is used only when a horse or pony is in a breast collar harness as it goes with the movement. a full collar should not be used with a swingle tree is it causes the collar to rock on the shoulders and causes discomfort.

a full collar should be attached to the Splinter bar, which is part of the carriage.
