What is the best bit for my horse

I have a 4 yr old tb that I have had sence he was 2. He is just turning 4 and will be getting professional training everyday starting next week..I broke him myself and that was not my first time..he has NEVER bucked with me and my 8 yr old sister can canter him..he is very willing to learn and I am sending him to get training for hunter/jumper. He is growimg out of his "baby bit" (little o ring snaffle) and I want to get him a new bit fhe can jump in..what is the best bit for jumping..would a full cheek snaffle be good or somthing else?? your help is greatly appreciated!!

I would ask your trainer what their personal preference is before spending alot of money on another bit. Many people end up with a row of bits and have only one or two they actually use!

Many trainers prefer O ring snaffles, they find there is more "feel" to them than a D ring or egg-butt. Also, what type of bar is there in the snaffle - are you doing well with a nice wide smooth bit or would your horse be better with a thinner bit, or a french link?

Full cheek snaffles can be lovely as well. If you could borrow a bit or two, and give them a try on your horse you might have an idea what suits him without having to lay out alot of extra money.

I would expect that you want a gentle, smooth bit when your horse begins to jump. You want to be certain that he is respectful but not afraid of the bit, and you need it to be soft enough that he's not scared to reach for the bit. Also, when you are first learning to jump yourself you'll want to be sure your bit is easy on his mouth in case you ever bump it slightly yourself. Obviously you'll need something with a bit more power like a slow twist snaffle if your horse is running through the bit, or resisting, but at this point in time that doesn't sound like the case.
